A taste of the questions
Can I sketch each major system on my current type from memory: electrics, hydraulics, fuel, pneumatics, flight controls?
Can I explain what I'd lose, and what I'd still have, after a major failure in each system?
When I don't know a technical answer, do I say so plainly and say how I'd find out?
Why I wrote it
In my very first airline interview, I was asked about the Boeing 747. I had no experience on it, so I said honestly that I wasn't sure. I still got the job. Since then I've passed selection at two more airlines, including the toughest technical selection of my career, and joined my current airline as a direct-entry captain.
The things that catch candidates out are rarely exotic. Nerves make people go blank, even on "tell me about yourself". Some come unprepared on the airline, on basic aircraft knowledge or on principles of flight. Some make up answers when they're not sure. This self-check helps you find those gaps while there's still time to fix them.
